Poul Volther chair design

Trained as a cabinetmaker and furniture designer, Poul Volther is true representative of the Danish modern and Scandinavian mid century design. With a passion for functionalist approach to furniture design, he found the post war years marked by scarcity of materials paradoxically inspiring. Early on in his career, he developed the idea of a chair which will rely on a number of cushions separated by open spaces in order to reduce the use of materials which weren’t always so easy (nor cheap) to obtain.

His first model of the kind, called the Pyramid chair can be dated to 1953, but its success on the market was rather insignificant, to put it mildly. However, it was then that Volther first developed his idea into a completed chair prototype, anticipating the unique style that will comntinue to mark some of the most successful Poul Volther chairs, including the Corona chair. Eight years later, he completed the most successful lounge chair of his life, the iconic Corona chair which continues to captivate the attention of the public and critics alike to this day.

Poul Volther’s Corona chair and ottoman: History in the making

Once Poul Volther’s Corona chair, also known by its designation EJ5 (due to it being originally manufactured by Erik Jørgensen), appeared on the market alongside matching ottoman, it quickly charmed the general public with its extraordinary organic form and one of a kind stylistic appeal that was unseen before. It was clear that Volther not only managed to achieve his goal of economizing on the materials, but also to do so while creating a completely new avant-garde style that still remain rooted in the core postulates of Scandinavian mid century modern design philosophy that gave birth to some of the most famous 20th century armchair designs. His Corona chair and ottoman perfectly obscured the pragmatic lack of material with their futuristic appeal (making it a good match for Eero Aarnio’s retro-futuristic Ball chair) and extraordinary organic style rooted in rich upholstered seat and backrest pads (aniline leather in original version, with fabric being more popular in later models) contrasted with sleek, cold appeal of stainless steel frame.
